The main entrance to the old town core both then and now was the main (southern) town gate. Because of the vault above it, it was popularly known as Voltica.
It was decorated in 1731 during the Jesuits’ rule whilst in 1769 the Jesuit order’s coat of arms was placed above the baroque stone portal. The gate no longer exists today, but in the past it was used as a form of defence. At sunset, it was closed and at dawn reopened, so those who were not able to enter the town before sunset slept outside the walls. Those who lived outside the town walls at that time were called vanjšćaki (outsiders), and the happier inhabitants living inside the walls were called grajani (insiders).
